IoT Connectivity Technologies
There is no single connectivity technology that is right for every IoT deployment. The best option depends on a wide range of factors, including device location, mobility, data usage, power consumption, required speeds and the importance of uninterrupted connectivity.
4G and 5G connectivity, or cellular IoT SIM cards are suited to devices that need reliable mobile data access across wide geographical areas. Higher-bandwidth applications such as CCTV, digital signage, routers, and connected equipment can particularly benefit from cellular connectivity.
Narrowband IoT, or NB-IoT, is a Low-Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) technology designed for devices that transmit relatively small amounts of data and may need to operate for long periods using limited power.
It can be particularly useful for sensors, smart metering and other static devices where battery efficiency and coverage penetration are more important than high data speeds.
LTE-M is another cellular LPWAN technology designed for IoT. Compared with NB-IoT, it can support greater mobility and higher data rates, making it suitable for connected devices that move between locations or need to transmit data more frequently.
Together, LPWAN technologies such as NB-IoT and LTE-M are well-suited to large-scale, low-power IoT deployments.
Multi-network IoT SIMs give devices access to more than one mobile operator rather than tying the deployment to a single network. This provides additional resilience for applications such as logistics, asset tracking, security systems and other devices that regularly move between locations.
Cellhire’s global permanent roaming capabilities can also support IoT deployments operating internationally.

Keep your devices connected across 400+ networks in 185 countries
Experience uninterrupted connectivity worldwide with our permanent roaming solution.
Traditional data SIM cards may seem convenient, but they carry security risks and hidden costs. With network operators increasingly disconnecting foreign SIMs, your device could stop providing vital services without warning.
Our IoT connectivity solution comes with permanent roaming, meaning it is equipped with the necessary local permissions and seamless integration into foreign networks, ensuring smooth operations wherever the device resides.

IoT connectivity is the technology that allows Internet of Things devices to communicate with other devices, platforms and cloud-based systems. Depending on the application, this connection can be provided through cellular networks such as 4G, 5G, LTE-M and NB-IoT, as well as technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and satellite.
Want to understand the technology in more detail? Check out our guide to IoT connectivity.
IoT connectivity is essential for enabling data exchange between devices, allowing them to communicate and perform actions in real-time. It’s also essential for scalability, allowing more devices to be added without compromising performance.
A standard mobile SIM is primarily designed for devices such as smartphones and tablets. An IoT SIM is designed specifically for connected devices and machine-to-machine communication, where requirements can include multi-network access, remote SIM management, global roaming, fixed IP addresses, private APNs and long-term deployment.
Cellhire’s multi-network IoT connectivity provides access to all four major UK networks, EE, O2, Vodafone and Three, and more than 430 networks across 191 countries globally, depending on the selected solution and deployment. We also offer a single network option on EE.
Cellhire’s SIM Management Portal enables businesses to manage connectivity centrally. Users can monitor SIM status and usage, provision or bar SIMs, access reporting, set automation rules and connect their own systems using APIs.
IoT connectivity can incorporate several network-level security controls. Cellhire provides options including private and public IP addressing, private APNs, L2TP, IPSec tunnelling and secure VPN access, depending on the requirements of the deployment.
No. The right connectivity depends on what the device needs to do. A high-bandwidth application such as connected CCTV may benefit from 4G or 5G, while a battery-powered sensor transmitting small amounts of data may be better suited to LPWAN technologies such as NB-IoT or LTE-M.
M2M connectivity generally refers to direct communication between machines or devices without human involvement. IoT is broader and can connect large numbers of devices to cloud platforms, applications and other systems. Both can use cellular SIM connectivity to transmit data.
Global IoT connectivity works by enabling devices to transmit data securely and seamlessly across borders using a robust network of operator partnerships. Global IoT connectivity providers like Cellhire have networks that span over 430 relationships across 191 countries, ensuring that your IoT devices can connect and operate reliably no matter where they are deployed.
Global IoT connectivity relies on communication networks that allow IoT devices to connect to the internet from virtually any location.
